About
The Running & Reading Club
The Running & Reading Club after-school program
effectively addresses the need for enhanced literacy and physical
activity among economically challenged children in the communities
it services. KidsFest recognizes that elementary students have
been traumatically affected by the cuts to essential physical
education programs over the last decade. Research shows that
students who engage in daily physical activity demonstrate improved
academic performance.
The Running & Reading Club operates directly
within local inner city schools, and run for two hours per week
from October to June, taking children on an “adventure” that
improves their physical, mental, emotional and social health,
and increases their love of reading, thereby positively impacting
their literacy skill level. Each week, children build their strength
and endurance through running and fitness activities, receive
individualized reading assistance, and are provided with a nutritious
and satisfying snack. The program culminates in a 5 Km Kids Run
and an awards ceremony recognizing each child’s achievement
at the end of the school year. The Running & Reading Club
program is currently operating within numerous inner city schools,
servicing over 700 children in the GTA, throughout Ontario, and
across Canada. |
